TPS62162: Improve Efficiency of TPS62162 Buck Circuit

Dear Team, 

I have Buck DC-DC converters :

 

L52, L53 : LQM21PN2R2MGHL

C297, C299: KGM05DR50J226MH

Input: 5V, 117mA - 170mA

Output:  3.3V, 140mA - 250mA. 

Efficiency: 75%- 79%

Questions:

1, Is inductance and output capacitance and diode effect the efficiency on converter?

2, How can I improve efficiency with this circuit since as I check, efficiency can reach to 85% - 90%?

    Hi Power,

    1. Of course the inductor and diode effect the efficieny. 

    The forward voltage of diode is ~0.5V, and the power dissipation is 0.5*0.17=85mW.

    The DCR of the inductor is 125mOhm, and the power dissipation is larger than 0.25*0.25*0.125= 7.2mW (Inductor also has AC loss etc.)

    The output capacitance hardly influence the efficiency.

    I have done a simulation using our WEBENCH tool and you can see the total Pd is 70.57mW and it's clear of the power loss of each part FYR.

    2. As my calculation above, the main power loss is diode loss.

    You can try a diode with lower forward voltage or if you just concern the IC efficiency, you can test the voltage just on the input capacitor but not the 5V before the diode.
