UCC27284: Can only use high-side of half-bridge driver?

Part Number: UCC27284

Hi experts,

Customer need a low delay high side driver.

Can we only use high-side of half-bridge driver?

What are the risks and additional configurations?

Thank you!

Best regards,

Tommy Mao

  • Hey Tommy,

Thank you for your question. Yes, you can use a half-bridge driver such as the UCC27284 as a high-side driver. But, in order to switch the high-side driver, the bootstrap capacitor needs to be charged which is typically handled when the low-side output is on in the typical half-bridge configuration. Because you are not using the low-side drive, the bootstrap capacitor would not get charged and would not have enough charge for use as a high-side driver. You can check out this Link to an article on using a half-bridge driver to perform high-side switching. You would have to switch the low-side output to charge the bootstrap capacitor or you could choose an external circuit such as a charge pump or an isolated floating bias (such as the SN6505 or UCC14240) to keep the bootstrap circuit charged.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Thank you,

    William
