ISO5452: Can I replace ISO5452 with ISO5852?

Part Number: ISO5452
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO5852S

I am using ISO5452 driver in solar inverter (three phase) with DC bus ranging from 200V to 800V with switching frequency 4kHz. I bought ISO5852 instead of ISO5452 due to component non-availability. Most of the key specifications matched for both devices. However I'm facing issues when I have 4x ISO5452 and 2x ISO5852 drivers in my inverter. The de-sat current limiting resistor is burning/fail open where ISO5852 devices are present. Any suggestion/recommendation to address this issue?

  • Hi Mervin,

Thanks for reaching out. The schematic and layout recommendations for both are similar as shown below:

Looks like the de-sat current limiting resistor is not enough. What is the value that's being used? Did you try using different resistor value or a resistor which higher power rating?

You can also use the UCC217XX XL to calculate the DESAT component values.

  • Hi Pratik, thanks for your answer. I'm using 2.4k/0805 resistor. It works just fine when I have ISO5452 as driver for all of my 6 IGBTs in Inverter. Only when I use ISO5852 for any two of the IGBTs I see this issue. This is a design which is almost moved to production and I haven't had any issue with 2.4k/0805 so I don't doubt on the resistor value and power rating, just because ISO5452 was not on-stock and while checking for alternates, I found ISO5852 to be similar and tried.

  • Hi Mervin,

    Thanks for the follow up.

Did you try the ISO5852 on multiple boards or is this failure happening only on a single board?

Did you try swapping the two ISO5852s with other ISO5852 and check. Please check if the DESAT pin is short with any pin, that might also cause the damage.

    Best,

    Pratik
