[FAQ] BQ25720: How to set maximum input current limit?

Part Number: BQ25720

Hi,

How to understand the description about “nominal or typical input current limit” and “maximum input current limit”,which one is the actual input current limit? How to add“100mA/200mA offset” to calculate the maximum input current limit”?

It would be greatly appreciated if you could provide an example.

Thanks

  • Hi Clever,

Thanks for your feedback. I agree this section is ambiguous.

Let us use 10-mohm current sense as an example.

    1. There is no offset for the input current limit, the charger has a low clamp at 50mA, so if you set input current to 0mA, it is clamped at 50mA.

    • User input,  charge setting
    • 0mA, => 50mA;
    • 50mA, 50mA
    • 100mA, 100mA
    • ...

    2. Note this current is typical input current limit. Since the charger has a part-to-part tolerance of +/-100mA. If the user sets a typical 2900mA input current limit, you could get below input current range. (REG0x3F() = 0x3A00H)

    • min, typ, max
    • 2800mA, 2900mA, 3000mA

TI suggests considering this parameter variation in the design process. For example, the customer may set the current limit higher purposely.

I hope this clarifies your confusion.

    Tiger

  • Hi, Tiger

Thank you for your thoughtful answer. It‘s crystal clear to me now.

         Best regards,
