TPSM843B22: Recommended switching frequency

Part Number: TPSM843B22

Hi team,

Which frequency is better for 12Vin?

Customer consider to use TPSM843B22 for FPGA and input voltage is 12V +/-10%.

From the datasheet,

  • 8.2 Typical Applications, Vin=12V and fsw =1MHz.
  • Figure 8-2. Maximu Input Voltage vs Output Volltage, When Vin = 12V, fsw = 1.5MHz or 2.2MHz seems better

Could you give me answer and brief explaination?

Kind regards,

Goto

  • A dc/dc converter is usually optimized for one or a couple of the following: physical size, transient response, efficiency or cost.

Size and efficiency usually are most common optimizations.

If optimizing for small size, a higher switching frequency is typically better since the external passives can be smaller.

If optimizing for efficiency, a lower switching frequency can be better since the switching losses will be lower.

However, the TPSM843B22 is a module and the inductor is integrated and a fixed value.

Input Voltage range and Output voltage are factors into a design decisions on switching frequency.

Regulating from 12V to 0.8V at 2200kHz is not an option because of minimum controllable on time.

I would recommend going to the product folder toward the bottome and using webench.  https://www.ti.com/product/TPSM843B22
