Hello TI Engineers,
I have been directed to this forum by customer support to enquire about the possibility of purchasing a version of the BQ2980 battery protection IC with different programmed thresholds other than the standard versions that are currently available in distribution. If this is a possibility, please could you advise me of MOQ, cost, & expected lead time, and contact details of where to order the custom part from.
I am currently designing a battery pack for a medical device (myoelectric prosthetic arm) which will be powered by a single Molicell INR-18650-P28A Lithium Ion cell. This cell has a 35A maximum discharge current, in order to fully utilize the high current capability of this cell we need a BQ2980 protection IC with increased thresholds for discharge and short circuit protection. Our initial specification for the custom programmed device is detailed below.
Specification |
BQ2980-XX Ideal Values / (Thresholds) |
||
Under voltage (Delay 133ms) |
2.7 Volts or 3.0V? |
||
Over voltage trip voltage (Delay 1S) |
4.3 Volts |
||
Over charge trip current (Delay 8ms) |
6 Amps (OCC -8 mV) |
||
Over discharge trip current (Delay 8ms) |
22 Amps (OCD 22 mV) |
||
Short circuit trip current (Trips in 250uS) |
32 Amps (SCD 32 mV) |
||
Sense resistor value in ohms |
0.001 Ohms |
||
Over Temperature |
Enabled 75 C |
At present I can find no protection ICs, from any manufacturer, that have the capability to protect such a high current cell, there is perhaps an opportunity in the market here.
The protection circuit that we are considering operates with the BQ294602DRVT providing secondary fuse protection by blowing an Eaton SCF4030-22-01 fuse.
The BQ294602DRVT has a minimum operating voltage of 3.0V, so it may be required that the under voltage limit of the BQ2980 is set to 3.0V, but would be preferable to have a lower value to maximize the working capacity of the battery pack. At present I am not clear on the possible behavior of the BQ294602DRVT if operated below it’s minimum voltage.
I would be much obliged if you could confirm if it is possible to order such a custom device. If there is the possibility of application engineer support, that would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
