Hello,

We are currently using the BQ27411DRZT-G1A to monitor an 1800mAh Lithium-Ion battery. 

After plugging in the initial design parameters (design voltage, design capacity, design energy, terminate voltage, taper rate) into the Battery Management Studio, we are seeing unreliable SoC readings. 

While charging, the SoC appears to alternate between reading 0 and then what appears to be the correct SoC. Below is an example of this, with the screenshots taken less than a minute apart:

          

BAT_DET is high in both examples above, which makes me believe that it is not causing the SoC reading 0. 

When discharging, the SoC always reads 0.

Below are the design parameters we used:

Also, we are able to succesfully read AvgCurrent, Voltage, and Temperature. I will attach some log files taken during both discharging and charging.

Any help with getting correct SoC readings will be very much appreciated!

    Hi Anthony,

    I have attempted a few learning cycles since this post. Unfortunately all of them seemed to have resulted in an error.

    Following the SLUA903 directions, my learning cycles usually get automatically cancelled after relaxing the battery for 2 hours. This is after charging the battery to full. This is the error I usually see: 

    Error: [VOK: Not Clear]
    Learning cycle cancelled

    For reference, this is the battery I am attempting the learning cycle with:
    DM_ICP1003450B-V7-82019-1800mAh.pdf

    My design parameters are as follows:

    Design Voltage: 3700mV
    Design Capacity: 1800mAh
    Design Energy: 6660mWh
    Empty Voltage: 3000mV
    Taper Current: 100mA
    Taper Rate: 164
    Dsg Current Threshold: 200
    Chg Current Threshold: 200
    Quit Current: 257


    The following .zip contains the log file and .gg files of my last learning cycle:

    One interesting thing I noticed, is that when I began charging the battery after relaxing for 5 hours, all the design parameters appeared to get cleared. This can be seen when comparing the .gg files: '64Learning_Cycle_11_06_2023.gg' vs. '65Learning_Cycle_11_06_2023.gg'.

    Although I have no idea if this is related to the [VOK: Not Clear] error.
    Any advice or suggestions you may have regarding this VOK error and completing a successful learning cycle would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Daniel,

    We took a look into the log file you sent and we do not believe there has been enough time between the end of charge and the relax period occurring for the gauge to take the valid OCV measurement for the VOK bit to be cleared. Seen in the log file, only about 30 minutes are waited after the charge when it should be 2 to 5 hours when the voltage settles. For the OCV measurement to be taken, the voltage cannot move more than 4 uV/s seen from the document below.

    Do you mean the relaxation period following the end of charge was not long enough? 

    After charging the battery, I removed the charger and allowed the battery to relax for 2 hours. This is when BqStudio starts a timer for the relaxation period, which is 2 hours. After this 2 hour period, I receive the [VOK: Not Clear] error, and the learning cycle gets automatically cancelled in BqStudio .This has happened during several learning cycles I have performed. 

    The log file elapsed time should show about 120 minutes during this relaxation period. 

    I am not sure how to increase the time during this relation period beyond 2 hours, because it seems BqStudio only allows 2 hours to relax during this time.

    Hi Daniel,

    We believe that the two hours should be enough, so we looked at the DOD0 values in the log file and it shows that the battery is saturating even though you are not going out of the voltage range. Is it possible for you to increase the voltage discharge stops at by 50mV and decrease the voltage charge stops by 50mV and send a log file to see if this changes the situation?

    Hi Anthony,

    I have ran several learning cycles following your recommendation to increase the discharge voltage stop by 50mV (~3050mV) and decrease of the voltage charge stop by 50mV (~4135mV).

    Each learning cycle ended during the second rest period with the [VOK: Not Clear] error. For reference, here is one of the most recent cycle's log files and .gg files:

    It seems that achieving 4uV/sec within the 2 hour rest period is very difficult. EMI disturbances or power line issues could also interrupt this requirement.

    Since the battery is able to successfully clear the VOK bit during the first rest period, which usually takes longer than 3 hours. Is it somehow possible to extend the second rest period timer beyond 2 hours?

    Hi Daniel,

    Sorry for the delay.

    It should take much less time for the battery to relax from full charge compared to when being discharge.

    Looking at the learning cycle log you sent, the voltage is staying between 3821 mV and 3819 mV for almost 45 minutes but is fluctuating between there frequently, which is probably where the 4uV/sec is being broken.

    Can you tell me more about the EMI disturbances and power line issues that could be occuring?

    Hi Anthony,

    The taper current behavior is mainly due to decreasing the voltage charge stop by 50mV, so the charger never enters the Constant Voltage charge mode. Therefore, the charging current is higher before stopping the charge. Do you suggest running the same test with the taper current design parameter increased on the fuel gauge? 

    These were my original settings:

    Taper Current: 100mA
    Taper Rate: 164

    The charge current is about 530mA before entering relax mode if I decrease the voltage charge stop by 50mV. Should the Taper Current design parameter be changed to 530mA and Taper Rate to 30.9 to accommodate this?

    We would recommend either decreasing the charge current since this could help the voltage not return to the flat region as it is above, or to include the taper current.
