TPS65988DK: Smart powe rufnction issue on TBT4 dock produc

Part Number: TPS65988DK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982DMC,

Hi Sir,

My customer use TPS65988DK and TPS65982DMC at their TBT4 design. They report there's charging issue at main charging port (UFP) with incorrect charging current: only 20V3A for charge but there's no other device connected at other DFP port (full charging current is 4.8A). It happened at some NB model with 20%~100% failure rate. Please help to check is there any setting issue on customer's PJT, or they need to upgrate their FW to newer version? Thanks for your kindly help.

Best regards,

Gary Teng

  • Hi Gary,

Let me take a look at the logs and project file and get back to you early next week.

  • Hi Alex,

Any comment about the issue? I see someone meet similar problem in E2E before but doesn't know how to solve it...

    Regards,

    Gary

  • Hi Gary,

Let me state my assumptions from the information you provided. Please let me know if I am incorrect.

    • The PD port of the TPS65988DK is the UFP and SRC when the issue is seen.
    • The maximum negotiated source PDO current should be 4.5A, as this is set in the TX Source Capabilities register.

I see that in the PD logs you provided, the PD is advertising 20V 3A and 20V 4.5A respectively. Each time, the PD negotiates the maximum current we advertise with the far-end.

The current of the active PD contract is at 3A because that is what we advertised. The question now is why did the TPS65988DK advertise 20V 3A max if in the TX Source Capabilities register the 20V PDO had a 4.5A max current. Can you confirm both PD logs were collected with the same project file?

    Best,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

Those logs are recorded from the same board/FW/PJT. What else we have to provided to you for clearing the issue?

    Regards,

    Gary

  • Hi Gary,

The project file looks fine. What firmware version is your customer using?

From what I see, in the 20V 3A case, the PD is advertising 3A max current for all PDOs while the source capabilities are configured for 5A max or 4.5A max. This should not be happening.

Is your customer able to connect to their board from the Application Customization GUI tool using I2C/TIVA, etc...? If they are, please have them go to debug mode and capture a register snapshot (found in debug tab once in debug mode) after the TPS65988DK has established a 20V 3A PD sourcing contract with the far-end.

    Best,

    Alex
