MC34063A: Audible sound comes from MC34063A in Buck-boost Converter.

Part Number: MC34063A

Sir,

I have designed buck-boost converter using Texas MC34063A for below specifications

Input Voltage : 8 VDC to 28 VDC

Output Voltage : 12V/0.12A

The design works properly for entire input voltage with load variation from 10mA to 0.12A.

However audible sound comes from Converter IC MC34063A without affecting output voltage.

Please let us know the reason for this sound and how we can overcome it.

  • Hello Arvind,

Audible noise is often caused by the inductor as this is mechanically changing with the applied voltage.

Can you please check if the noise is gone when you remove the inductor from the board and connect it via wires to the 2 pads?

If the sound is gone, a rotation of the inductor sometimes helps, or you can try a different inductor with a different volume, this might solve the issue as well.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte

  • Mam,

I removed inductor and tried out by soldering it to inductor pads on PCB using wires for audible noise test.

The audible noise are from inductor itself and not from switcher MC34063A.

So as per your suggestions, I have tried with different inductor and 100uH/4A inductor value solved the issue.

With 100uH/4A inductor noise has been gone and checked for 9 V to 29 V range and no audible noise were observed.

Thanks for help and support !!
