TPS2000C: Power Distribution Switch Vs EFuse Vs Hotswap

Dear Team,

When I read the datasheets of all the above three IC solutions (Load distribution switches or load switches, efuses and Hotswaps), I understand all the three will perform the same set of tasks namely current monitoring, voltage monitoring, controlled startup of output voltage and fault monitoring or diagnostics along with appropriate current or voltage protections.

Technically, I want to understand the major difference between all the three products (Efuse vs hotswap vs load distribution switch).

Can someone please explain the differences in detail?

Hi Siri,

TPS2000C is a current limit switch (some might also refer it as a load switch). Its difference with eFuse is when the device is in a short circuit or is under over current:

A current limit switch will output at its current limit value (for the case on TPS2000C, it is typical). It will then either return to normal operation condition when the circuit is recovered from short or over current; or potentially enters thermal shut down when fault condition continues for too long and the device is too hot.

A efuse -- base on my understanding will shut down the output in a short circuit.

Efuse and hotswap devices are not from my shop, we are internally working to get this chain connected to other teams to further comment on these device categories.

Hi Siri,

eFuse is nothing but hotswap solution with integrated FET. These offer more protection features than power distribution switches.

Most of the power distribution switches does not provide overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, internal FET protection loke eFuse / hotswap devices.

Can you share your application or end product to suggest suitable device

Hi Rakesh,

Though the query is not specific to any application, I would like to understand what is preferred for the below cases specifically and why not the other devices in the same applications?

1. USB protection

2. SFP protection

All of the above discussed devices would fit for the USB and SFB protection requirements. The solution cost will be high with eFuse and hot swap devices
