LM5160-Q1: ripple ratio setting

Part Number: LM5160-Q1

Can you tell me why the ripple ratio is limited to 20~50%? What will happen if it exceeds 50%?

  • hi, Lin,

Could you clarify the ripple is for Vout or Vin or inductor ? and where your saw this requirement 20~50%,  is it from customer application spec .

    Elena

  • Hi Elena,

It's inductor ripple current ratio, the suggest value is from calculate sheet provide by TI.

  • hi, Lin,

You can calculate the inductor ripple with different K values from 0.2 to 0.5, the samller the inductor value the larger the ripple, under same duty and loading, if this ripple is very larger, then it have risk to trigger the current limit, the peak value can refer from EC table. then the device will triggle OC protect, it may not work normal.

  • Hi Elena,

So the  problem is EMI , loss , ic current spec limit,is it correct ?

  • Yes, you are right. The  very larger ripple even lead device NOT start up normal, if the peak current limit is trigged during start up stage.

Also EMI and efficiency  is the influenced although it function normal.
