BQ25050: BQ25050 Battery Charge Termination event is NOT occurring

Part Number: BQ25050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25185

Hello,

I am using BQ25050 in my new design with #CNTRL pin kept floating ( I am okay to use default current of 285mA )  and #CHG pin connected to LEDs for indicate charge status.

The schematic  image is attached for reference.

Once connected 5V USB VBUS voltage, it is noticed that fast charging is happening with 280mA but termination is not all happening even  Ichg  current is less than 7.5% of 285mA.

I measured with a ammeter and noted that after a long period of time ( appx 9-10 hours) ICHG =appx 1mA but still #CHG pin are LOW .

The LEDs connected to #CHG pin through P-MOS are still glowing with ICHG =1mA. It is understood that , termination is never happens.

Could you please check the circuit and suggest the solution.

Regards

  • Hello,

Thanks, for reaching out on E2E. Just a few things to help troubleshoot.

Would it be possible to look at the battery voltage after this long period of time that you mention? Measuring the voltage on the battery and the voltage as close to the BAT pin as possible?

Do you have any loads that are connected to the OUT pin or is the battery the only thing that is connected to the OUT of the IC?

To help determine what the current is, replace the resistor on IMON R8 with a 1K ohm resistor and measure the voltage on IMON?

If you are working on a new design, the BQ25185 is one of our newer ICs that would save cost on an external FET.

  • Hi,

After long period of below mentioned charging time, battery voltage is 4.19V (measured near battery).

Also, Battery the only thing that is connected to the OUT of the IC.

Let me know what is the termination current  for default charging current of 285mA?

Why #CHG stat pin is low with 1mA charging current and why termination is not happening?
