BQ25505: BQ25505 with reverse polarity battery connected

Part Number: BQ25505

I am using BQ25505RGRT in my design. What will happen if a battery with reverse polarity is connected to this chip? I am not going to use series diode with my battery for reverse polarity protection, because of the voltage drop. So wanted to make sure that if by mistake a reverse polarity battery is connecter to BQ25505RGRT, no hazard is going to happen.

Is there internal protection inside BQ25505RGRT for battery reverse polarity connection? If not, is there a chance of hazard? Or just BQ25505RGRT will get damaged due to exceeding absolute maximum rating of the chip.

Please let me know,

  • Hi Kaveh,

A battery connected would likely damage the part. The absolute maximum ratings for negative voltage on the VBAT_SEC pin is -0.3V, so applying a more negative voltage than that can risk device damage. There isn't any particular internal protection within the BQ25505 for reverse battery polarity.
