TPS65988DK: Questions of TPS65988DK

Part Number: TPS65988DK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS55288, BQ25628, BQ25798

Dear Team,

customer application as below in blue

  1. Will this product only provide power input and output? No data (USB…), right? Master is Device A/B. This product (Dock) will not get data from Device.
  2. What is USB-C output current spec? Max current 3A

The system is as below:

Please help check whether this system which we provided to customer is correct and the any risk will occur? Thanks for your great support.

Many Thanks,

Jimmy

  • Hi Jimmy,

Who is the end customer (ODM and/or OEM) and what kind of application is this being used for?

I don't see any major risk from their block diagrams, what is the max power rating for both ports?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi Raymond,

    Thanks for your great support.

Max power rating of input and output ports are 15V/3A (45W).

Do we have TPS65988DK’s reference design for customer reference?

    Many Thanks,

    Jimmy

  • Hi Jimmy,

You can refer to TPS65988DK EVM. Is customer going to use their MCU to do port power management? (i.e. if the sink only port is sinking 5V/3A will the source port power be adjusted)

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi Raymond,

Thanks for your reply. MCU is used to monitor charger IC status and for LED display.
Power is managed by TPS65988DK to control TPS55288/9 (via I2C) for source port output voltage adjustment.
If I have any misunderstanding of the system, please help clarify.

    Many Thanks,

    Jimmy

  • Hi Jimmy,

To clarify will the system (charger IC + battery) have enough power to provide to the source out port regardless if the sink only port is only sinking low power (i.e. 5V/3A) to no power? Is the source out port dependent on how much power is coming in from the sink only port or no?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi Raymond,

Sorry for late reply. Thanks for your feedback!

    >>> Could you help to clarify will the system (charger IC + battery) have enough power to provide to the source out port regardless if the sink only port is only sinking low power (i.e. 5V/3A) to no >>>power?

    >>> Is the source out port dependent on how much power is coming in from the sink only port or no?

Yes, output dependent on sink only port. When sink only port with low power or outage, then the Device will go into power saving mode and supplied by battery.

We have a consideration of battery 3S1P(~11V) structure of the system. In this case the charger IC BQ25628/9 need to be changed due to VSYS and VBUS voltage range. Do you have any suggestion charger IC of this case?

And whether the new charger IC is acceptable for this system as well?

    Many Thanks,

    Jimmy

  • Hi Jimmy,

I'll forward this thread to the Battery Charger team for their input.

Whether it's acceptable, on the I2C interface either the MCU or the PD can configure the BQ.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hi Jimmy,

BQ25798 is a good option for 3S1P battery charger. It can operate with up 24V input in forward/charge mode and has USB-C PPS voltage steps in reverse/OTG mode. Either the MCU or the PD can configure the charger.

    Regards,

    Jeff
