Vbias provides the gate drive for the regulator's n-channel FET. As opposed to a regulator with a p-channel FET, the n-channel FET has lower Rdson for the same die area and current rating. Therefore, a lower voltage can be applied to the regulator's power input (VIN) as compared to a similar current rated, p-channel FET regulator. Since regulator efficiency is Vout/Vin, the regulator with Vbias will be typically be more efficient than a PFET regulator.
