LM21215A: Webench sweep frequency setting

Part Number: LM21215A

Hello,

I am running output ripple analysis on LM21215A power converter. the simulation runs from 100Hz to 1MHz. I can't find any option on Webench to change this frequency range, to 100MHz. Also, how can I save my custom design in webench and recall it when I need to re-run the simulation with changes?

  • Hi User,

Device LM21215A as per datasheet supports a maximum frequency of 1.5MHz as shown in image 1 below.

    Image 1

Desired frequency in the range from 300KHz to 1.5MHz can be set using the advanced option "User Sync Frequency" as shown in image 2 below.

-Also, how can I save my custom design in webench and recall it when I need to re-run the simulation with changes?

Could you please confirm in above point the custom design you are referring to ?

    Thanks and Regards,

    Umayal

  • Hi Umayal

thanks for the feedback. so basically, user cannot go above and beyond operating frequency range of the device as stated in the data sheet, correct? if so, is there any way around this?

one other thing that bugs me, is that if I have made final changes to the schematic in the Webench and decide to change the sync frequency (I assume I have to click the Redesign button in the advanced option for this change to take effect) it changes all component values back to default. Is there anyway to save the changes, in case something like this happens, i recall it and continue on without re-assigning the component values?

  • Hi Ali,

First, on WEBENCH if you simulate Bode test bench for frequency analysis, WEBENCH tool simulates for default range of frequency i.e. 1Hz to 1MHz (highlighted frequency range), as infrastructure limitation user is not allowed or given access to change this frequency range. WEBENCH doesn’t have any alternative.

Second, “Redesign” button corresponds to entire design configuration and not restricted to schematic changes. Again, this is WEBENCH infrastructure limitation. You can always change the Sync Frequency to desired value, click on “Redesign” button and then alter/update individual components manually.

Third, If you want to save the changes and refer in later stage, there is no direct method to do this but alternatively you can follow below steps.

    Method 1:
    1. After required changes, click three dots on top right corner and click “Share Design”.

    2. You will be prompted to a window where you can chose to enter your email ID and have the Design link sent to that email ID or click on “Public Link”, then click “Get Link” and then copy the link.

    3. This link will open your design with latest changes made before creating the link.
    4. You have to follow step 1 & step 2 every time if you want to save or keep track of your design changes.

    Method 2:
    1. After required changes, click “Export” on top right corner and click “Print Report” to save your design in pdf format and refer in future.

Hope all your concerns are addressed, feel free to reach out to us for any further queries.

    Thank you

  • Hi Sateesh, appreciate the detailed response. I have used the export which saves the schematic and simulation details in pdf and or in a format suitable for a design tool, Altium for me. if I save the design by going through the first method, will I be able to open it up in Webench and run more simulations?

  • Hi Ali,

Certainly! By adhering to Method 1, you'll receive a design link. Clicking on it will open the design in WEBENCH Power Designer, allowing you to make additional modifications and simulations.

    Thank you

  • Thanks for being so prompt. One last question, how can I remove the old plots from simulation results and start fresh?

  • Hi Ali,

WEBENCH Power Designer will keep track of all the simulations you run for a particular design created even if you update input and output values or configuration values and you cannot remove these simulations results.

As an alternative, click "New Design" on top right corner and start over all again or have WEBENCH opened in multiple tabs and run desired simulations.

    Thank you

  • got it. thanks.

I thought last one was going to be my last question, but I noticed that when I change the "User Sync Frequency", the bode plot does not follow the Sync Frequency. When I first started, the bode plot plotted from 1Hz to 1MHz. I tried to make it to plot from 1Hz to 1.5MHz, the 1.5MHz is the max limit given for this device, LM21215A. but it got plotted up to 0.5MHz. after this no matter what I did, the plots get done up to 0.5MHz. see the spreadsheet output of the plot. I have highlighted the las frequency. what am I doing wrong with setting the frequency span for the plot?

  • Hi Ali

I hope we all agree and know that “User Sync Frequency” and Bode Frequency are totally different entities.

In this context “User Sync Frequency” is Switching frequency of this Buck converter based on which respective component selection happens (example: Inductor selection) and the range of this switching frequency is 300 KHz to 1.5 MHz as per the datasheet.

Bode Frequency is the frequency injected into the feedback loop to study the frequency response of the designed Buck converter. Frequency is swept from 1Hz to 1 MHz in WEBENCH. As mentioned earlier, user do not have access to change this range.

If we set Switching frequency as 1.5MHz, this will not alter bode frequency range i.e. 1Hz to 1MHz.

Kindly share us the design link and spread sheet which you are referring to.

    Thank you

  • Hi Sateesh,

Attached are spreadsheet of the simulation result and the email from Webench that contains the link to the design.

I ran the simulation this time without making any changes to Webench setting. The highest frequency in the spreadsheet is 478630Hz, not 1MHz.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ali,

Thanks for sharing the spreadsheet of the simulation result. We will verify and get back on this by end of this week.

    Regards,

    Umayal

  • Hi Ali

Thank you for sharing design link and spreadsheet. The design link which you shared is not accessible, you need to click on Public Link if you're sharing with others. I would request you to share the design link again by clicking on "Public Link".

Based on spreadsheet shared, we were able to replicate the results. There was a bug and we have fixed it. Please be informed that the changes will reflect on production tentatively by Friday i.e. 02nd Feb 2024, we'll keep you posted regarding the same.

Apart from this issue all other queries asked previously were addressed I believe. Please let us know if there are any further queries.

    Appreciate your patient support.

    Thank you
