BQ79612-Q1: BQ79612-Q1 Balancing

Part Number: BQ79612-Q1

Hello!
I have a couple of questions related to BQ79612 (Battery balancer and monitor chip); First I want to ask about the capability of the chip to do passive balancing during charging, I tried to do a simulation with the chip mechanism working during balancing(including the internal MOSFETs and the balancing resistors)  and saw that there is no problem with balancing during charging without disconnecting the charger so I just want to double check if this okay as it was not mentioned in the datasheet, second I want to ask some sort of a general question about if I can do the balancing all the way during charging and discharging ,are there some kind of limits to do the passive balancing during discharging?

  • Jon,

There are no technical issues with cell balancing during charge or discharge. However, during discharge the overall state of charge is constantly decreasing and therefore the point at which a cell is balanced is also constantly decreasing. Since it takes time to balance the cells this often means that running cell balancing during discharge does not accurately balance the cells. Many customers do not run cell balancing during discharge for this reason.

    Regards,

    Ben
