LM5170EVM-BIDIR: Is LM5170EVM-BIDIR suitable for a MPPT control of a solar panel?

Part Number: LM5170EVM-BIDIR
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5171, LM5177, LM51772, LM5170

Trying to make a MPPT algorithm where low side its 12 V and highside should be 48. My main concern is with the DC-DC conveter. Is LM5170EVM-BIDIR suitable for a MPPT control of a solar panel? As I have seen that you cannot control ouput voltage but the current

  • Hi Brian,

Thanks for reaching out. If you constantly want to operate in boost mode, I'd recommend you to look at the LM5171, as it's the newer component that you could use in conjunction with an MCU to achieve MPPT.

However, if the input side could sometimes rise higher than the output voltage and you'd need a buck-boost mode converter, I'd like to point you to the LM5177 or the newer LM51772.

As for using the LM5170EVM-BIDIR to achieve MPPT, you'd have to create an outer control loop with an MCU to control the LM5170, and I'm not aware if the EVM is designed in a way that's optimal for this application.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Bryan
