REF6041: REF6041 Shared Between ADCs

Part Number: REF6041
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7066, , ADS7067

Hi,

I am considering a topology of a single REF6041 providing reference to up to three ADS7066/ADS7067 ADCs. My goal is to eliminate any headache around designing a reference buffer, so the REF6041 is a good choice for this. I am wondering what needs to be considered when adding multiple ADCs to a REF6041 output? I understand the reference current needed from the REF6041 is increased, but don't understand how adding more ADCs will impact the settling time and DC performance. Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

- Alex

  • Hello Alex,

Here are some things to consider when using a single REF6041 for multiple ADCs:

    1. Source current. This is something you already mentioned, but make sure the current that REF6041 is sourcing is less than 4 mA, as specified in the datasheet.

    2. Load capacitance. Make sure the appropriate output capacitor is connected to the REF6041 output in the range of 10 uF to 47 uF as specified in the datasheet while also connecting the specified capacitor to the reference pin of the ADCs.

    3. Force and sense connection. Short the force and sense pins of REF6041 as close to the ADCs as possible.

For three ADCs, as along as these basics are followed, I would expect the REF6041 to perform within datasheet specifications.

    Thanks,

    Jackson
