TPS65982: PD controller recommendation inquiry

Hi, TI expert

There is an inquiry from a customer about PD controller recommendation.

Application: Cradle

The functions must operate as shown below, and the functions must be supported at the same time.

- Device: Power Source Mode & USB Device Role
- Mobile equipment: Power Sink & USB Host Mode
- Charge: 5A/3A supported

The customer looked for TPS65982, but upon confirmation, it was confirmed to be an NRND (NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGNS) product.

Could you recommend a part that satisfies the above functions?

    Hi,

    For this design I would recommend looking into TPS65987DDK if they are designing for single port and TPS65988DK if they are looking for dual port.

    Hi, Tommy

    I have a question about the parts you recommended.

    The spec requested by the customer is 5V 3A.

    However, the internal power path of TPS65987DDK and TPS65988DK is 20V 5A.

    So, the internal power path is set to 20V 5A, but does that mean 5V 3A is also possible? (In other words, are all voltages and currents below 20V 5A possible?)

    Hi,

    The 20V5A on internal power path is referring to the maximum support PDO so yes TPS65987D/8DK can support 5V3A.

    As recommended, I proposed TPS65987DDK to the customer and said I would review it.

    I have a few inquiries.


    Q1) Is there an EVM board for TPS65987DDK?
    If you check on TI.com, the EVM board information is as follows.
    - TPS65987DDK → ??
    - TPS65987D → USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM
    - TPS65987DDJ → TPS65987DJEVM

    Is there any problem in reviewing the TPS65987DDK's EVM board using USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM?

    Q2) Also, please check again whether the requirements you asked about earlier are supported simultaneously with the TPS65987DDK.

    Hi

    Please use the TPS65987DDJ/KEVM.

    As of right now TPS65987DDKEVM is in the process of RTM and the targeted date is end of April. If customer cannot wait till then you can get a TPS65987DDJEVM and TPS65987DDK and swap DK onto the EVM.

    Yes, those requirements are achievable, you just need to configure the device in GUI and store the configuration in a flash so PD can load it.
