TPS25980: No power output from hot swap chip

Part Number: TPS25980

We are trying to implement the hot swap controller to act as a current limiting chip (0.9A max). We are inputting 5.2v to one of the V_in pins and the EN/UVLO pin on the chip, yet we see no output power. We only have one power going into one V_in pin, and one trace coming out of a single V_out pin.

Our main concern is with the thermal ground pad in the center of the chip. We left this floating, not connected to ground.

We have also left pads 2,3,7,9,13,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 floating

We have pads 4,5,11,12,14 connected to GND

24 as power out

10 is connected to a capacitor to ground

8 is connected to 2 resistors in series to ground

1 and 6 are connected to the input power from a capacitor

Based on this configuration, we have no power coming from the 24 power out pad. Is there any insight in why this may be?

  • Hi Nikhil,

I don't see any issue in the information you shared except the layout is not good. Not connecting the thermal pad will give you bad thermal performance (higher thermal resistance).

I recommend using pour and multiple pins instead of using only one single pin for input and output along with thin traces. For the PCB you already have, do you have any test pads. Is it possible to probe and get some waveforms for Vin, Vout, En near the device.

    Can you also share schematic?

    Best Regards,
