TPS61178: SW could not sync with the external c

Part Number: TPS61178
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-010057

Dear BU,

Could you pls check whether the TPS61178 couldn't achieve sync via the FPGA input 500KHZ. Customer test the SW PIN and FREQ PIN.

The Yellow waveform is CLK in FREQ PIN is 500Khz.

The Blue waveform is FREQ PIN is just 800K~1Mhz.

  • Hi Chris,

The external sync frequency should be within +-20% of the setting frequency to ensure a successful sync.

Please change the setting frequency to a suitable range and have a try.

    Best Regards,

    Fergus

  • Hi Fergus,

Thanks for reply. Do you mean that the sync frequency should be higher or lower than the setting? Not equal with the setting frequency?

  • Hi Chris,

Either higher or lower is ok.

Usually, it is not likely to be completely equal to the frequency.

    Best Regards,

    Fergus

  • The circuit design of the TPS61178 is based on the design in TIDA-010057

Device pin1 is connected to a 360K resistor

The synchronous CLK signal (500KHz, 3.3V, 50% duty cycle) was input from the C243 position, but when measuring the SW pin of the device (pin7), it was found that the operating waveform frequency of the device was jitter around 340-390 KHZ.

The Yellow waveform is SW PIN.

The Blue waveform is CLK in FREQ PIN is 500Khz.

1, try to disconnect C243, the device switching frequency can be measured at about 495KHz

The Yellow waveform is SW PIN.

2, restore C243, disconnect the resistance at the R139 position, the device switching frequency is more than 900 KHz, can not be synchronized to the input 500KHz

The C243 is changed to direct connection, and the D17 and R139 are removed - this state has been tested, and it is also unable to synchronize the operating frequency of the TPS61178 device to 500KHz
The 500KHz sync clock of the FPGA output could be measured on the input side of the C243 position, but the 61178 device was never able to synchronize to this frequency.

Does the TPS61178 not support external synchronization and can only be automatically PFM performed by the IC?
    Can TPS611781 support external synchronization?

  • Hi Chris,

    1. When the device comes to PFM mode, it will reduce its switching frequency.

When it works in heavy load, the frequency will always be the setting one,

When the load is light, the reduced frequency will be out of +-20% of the external frequency and fail to synchronize.

    2. It confuses me that when you removed C243, and the frequency looks 500kHz.

Is it tested in a heavy load condition?

    3. It is advised to use TPS611781 to do such synchronization.

TPS611781 is force PWM mode and the switching frequency will be always in the range.

you can apply for some samples or I can send some to you.

    Best Regards,

    Fergus

  • 1. Keep the synchronous frequency 500KHz input, pin1 keep 360K to the ground, try to increase the load, but the SW waveform frequency of TPS61178 does not change, still maintain a change in 340-390 KHz

    2. Remove the C243, TPS61178 pin1 connection 360 k resistor, the corresponding working frequency is near 500 KHZ

  • Hi Chris,

After testing and inquiring from design team,

it is found that TPS61178 is unable to do the sync function.

The function is only for the TPS611781.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Best Regards,

    Fergus
