LM5066I: Bidirectional current flow, control and protection with back-to-back eFuse

Part Number: LM5066I
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5069

Hi TI,

I am planning to use 2x LM5066I configured in back-to-back similar to the attached schematic. I would like to use the controls and protections (OCP, OVP, UVLO) for bidirectional current. I am designing for 16A at +48V

1) Is this configuration OK for LM5066I eFuse, with external N-FET? I am going to use 2x Linear FET IPB017N10N5LF in common source configuration, each MOSFET connected to each eFuse GATE pin.

2) LM5066I has I2C for telemetry and it can only read positive current through its I2C. With this configuration, I believed I can use one eFuse for current reading through I2C for each of the current direction (I will need to handle the direction of the current flow, and I can do this in my microcontroller). What will happen to the I2C current reading for the eFuse that has reverse current though it, since it can only read forward current? Will the register saturated at 0 or some other value?

Thanks

  • Some additional info:

For forward current direction (left to right), the source is ACDC power supply i.e. a voltage source. For reverse current direction i.e. current flow from right to left based on the schematic attached, the source is a current source.

  • Hi Sharina,

    Thanks for reaching out!

What is the application and end product ?

I don't see any concern in using LM5066i back-to-back connected like LM5069 way. For reverse currents, the internal ADC saturates and registers close to 0 value.
