Hello Team,

I am working on update BMS using TI BQ25890 charger, there is one issue that I am encountering and I hope to hear your suggestions.

I would like to run BQ25890 in Standalone Mode. Is there any chance to configure BQ25890 to achieve Battery Over-Discharge Termination(disconnect VSYS,disconnect Q4, or enter ShipMode and ShutdownMode) when battery voltage < 3000mV(set Battery LowV = 300mv) without extra Under Voltage Lock Out circuit or ShipFET.

Thank you for reaching out via E2E. Unfortunately when utilizing BQ25890 in standalone mode there is no way to configure battery over-discharge when battery < 3000mV.

In general ship mode feature will be the easiest way to disconnect VSYS from battery at a given battery voltage, but entering ship mode can only be initiated through I2C control (REG09 bit 5).

The BQ25890 does have a fixed over-discharge protection (discussed in section 9.2.15.2 of the datasheet), which turns off Q4 BATFET when battery voltage falls below Vbat_dpl (max 2.5V).

Thank you very much for your reply.

There is another charge termination issue that I am trying to solve and I hope to hear your suggestions too.

I try to charge battery till the charging current less than 64 mA (taper current of battery DS). According to BQ25890 DS 9.2.7.1 & 9.2.7.3 'The charger device automatically terminates the charging cycle when the charging current is below termination threshold', I have set Termination Current Limit' to 64 mA(Reg05 =00 ), However, the BQ25890 charger always terminated around 200 mA charge current when Battery Voltage stabilize(4445 mV) for around 200 seconds.

I would appreciated it if you could let me know how to achieve '9.2.7.3 Charging Termination' below 64 mA taper current. I attached BQ25890 Reg settings and test data as below for your reference.

Please see my comments below.

Firstly, there will be some part to part variation on termination current accuracy, but I would still expect to see termination occur at a lower charge current than 200mA with the 64mA setting. Is the reported behavior consistent from one IC to another? Or have you only tested with one board up to this point.

I have captured the below waveform using the BQ25890EVM and a battery simulator. I configured register settings to the same values as you provided. As you can see termination occurs very close to 64mA. How are you measuring charge current? In the attached test data "AvgCurrent" appears to reduce from 229mA to 11mA before termination occurs.

Actually, your comments have finally guided me found the root causes. My BQ25890 Charge Voltage setting 4.448v (Reg06_2-7) too close to BQ27742 Prot OV Config setting 07(4.45V max) which have caused BQ27742 reg0x0078 change to 10 and disconnect CHGFET.

The charger have terminated at 54 mA after I changed charge voltage to 4.432v and added IR Compensation Resistor/ IR Comp Voltage Clamp.

I would appreciate it if you could provide more details about the relationship(calculation formula) between IR Compensation Resistor/ IR Comp Voltage Clamp to charge voltage setting(BQ25890 Reg06) and Battery Voltage(BQ25890 Reg0E).

On all our charger ICs there is an accuracy spec on the termination threshold. While 64mA is the termination threshold it cannot be guaranteed that termination will occur below 64mA for all BQ25890 devices. Termination at 70mA is within reason given the 64mA ITERM setting.

The purpose of IR Compensation feature is to take into account parasitic resistance between BAT pin and the actual battery pack to stay in constant current phase of charge for longer time period. When the device can stay in constant current mode for longer the full charge time becomes shorter due to less time required in CV (constant voltage) phase.

Based on the setting for BAT_COMP in REG08 device will raise battery regulation voltage accordingly to compensate for the voltage drop due to parasitic resistance. VCLAMP setting in REG08 is included to prevent output regulation from exceeding a pre-determined max limit.

According to your comments, if I set 'Charge Voltage Limit = 4.432 V, IR Compensation Resistor = 20 mOhm, IR Comp Voltage Clamp = 32 mV',

1) what the BQ25890 BAT(Pin13/14) voltage should be when connect with 4.432 V fully charges battery load, with 4.400 V 97% charged battery load or without load(open circuit).

2) what is the highest BQ25890 BAT(Pin13/14) voltage, 4432 mV + IR Compensation Resistor(20 mOhm)*Termination Current(64 mA), 4432 mV + 32 mV, or 4432 ± Charge voltage resolution accuracy 0.5%(4454.16 mV)?

I would appreciate it if you could help to simulate these three conditions. I am not sure if you could provide your simulation tools or BQ25890 LTspice mode.

Hi Robert,

As the battery is approaching full charge BAT pin will be regulated to some value above charge voltage limit (4.432V) based on charge current at that time. No matter the charge current voltage clamp of 32mV ensures BAT pin will not be regulated above 4.464V. (There will be some tolerance due to charge voltage resolution accuracy).

As an example, when in CV phase and charge current = 500mA then BAT pin will be regulated to charge voltage limit of 4.442 (Voltage increase = 500mA x 20mohm BAT_COMP). When charge current = 1A BAT pin will be regulated to charge voltage limit of 4.452V.

We unfortunately do not have a simulation tool or model available for this device.

I am trying to automate the process using 'BQ-BMS-PROGRAMMER-SW' python scrip. Do you have any EV2400 I2C example code available? I have read & run your mks_sai_001_api.py. But the error msg shows 'blocksize' has not be defined(see below class def ). I would like to know what the value I should set for 'blocksize'.

The software for BQ-BMS-PROGRAMMER is for use with MKST-3P-ALT-EV2300, not for EV2400. Which adapter are you using for your tests? The EV2400 does not have command line type tools available.

The MKST-3P-ALT-EV2300 is the USB to I2C adapter option with command line type tools. It can work to perform I2C communication with BQ25890 and BQ27742.

The dedicated GUI tool for BQ25890 is designed to work with EV2400, but as Wyatt mentioned the EV2400 does not have command line type tools available.
