BQ40Z50-R2: Cannot clear XCHG/XDSG flags

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Pack is configured 2S with 18650 cells. I have programmed the correct chemistry, and made sure the cell count bits are [0, 1] but I cannot get the XCHG and XDSG flags to clear so the MOSFETs will operate.

If I manually toggle the FETs in BQStudio, it works and I can charge and discharge, but then they stay on and I cannot go into emshutdown mode. I suspect it is the RCA alarm, as the registers report 0mAh, but how am I supposed to cycle the pack if I cannot charge or discharge? Am I supposed to manually turn on the FETs and then cycle it, or is there a learning mode I need to enter?

I must be missing some configuration setting for the pack but I am at a loss currently.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Hey Matt,

You should be able to send the "FET_EN" command and that should turn on the FETs. You must manually turn on the FETs.

  • Thanks that seems to have done the trick. I am a little confused what the indented manufacturing is supposed to look like.

Is the intent to have the Mfg Status Init register set and then reset the device or are these commands expected to be sent during programming? I had been largely ignoring the Manufacturing Status registers because I wrongly thought they were for testing and could be ignored for a final product.

Thank you for the help! I now have an issue with the gauge LEDs never lighting, but I will read into a that a bit more and if needed, make a seperate post to keep things organized on here.
