BQ25170: BQ25170 Error after shorting IN to OUT

Part Number: BQ25170

I was able to run the BQ25170 through a couple of charge/discharge cycles and it was working.  We need to get CSA approval and one of the tests they will run is short IN to OUT and confirm the charger stops charging.  So, I did that and it did stop charging.  BTW, IN is 5V.  I removed the short and thought that the charger would resume normal operation and instead it is now stuck in an error state and indicated by 1Hz toggle on the STAT pin.  I have tried toggling the TS pin to ground, I have recycled power on the entire unit and I cannot get the charger to come out of the error condition and resume charging.  I did notice something interesting on the OUT pin.  It is fluctuating between1121.tek00016.tif battery voltage and what appears to be just above 4.2V or so.  BTW, VSET is 27K (4.2V).  I've attached a scope snapshot of the OUT pin.  According to the FMA analysis for this part, shoring OUT to something < 5.5V should not damage the part.  Not sure how to get out of the error state.

  • Hi Diane

The scope capture looks like a no battery condition, charger is charging output cap to 4.2V then discharges down to recharge point -- see figure 8-3 in datasheet.

One thing to check is the battery.

The battery protection module may have tripped and turned off charge path.

The battery will need to discharge to reset the protection module to enable charge path.
