LP5036: Using RGB Driver for RGBW/RGBWA Application

Part Number: LP5036

To whom it may concern,

I am working with a prototype for an RGBW/RGBWA animation application.  In terms of specifications, each LED will require 3.3V/20mA.  There are 5 sets of 4-5 colors (RGBW or RGBWA) in total that the engineer is trying to drive.

My question is, are you able to use an RGB LED Driver, such as the LP5036, for this application.  If so, what are the drawbacks?  From what I understand, since the LEDs will no longer be in groupings of 3, the ‘RGB Banks’ and ‘Intensity Control’ will not be possible to use.  However, the color mixing (which is the dimming function for each channel?) could still be used for each individual channel.  What would need to be done to use this device for 4-5 colors instead of just RGB?

Thank you,

Matthew

  • Hi,

Our expert is out of office and will give you feedback when comes back.

  • Hi Matthew,

    Sorry to late reply.

Yes, as you understand. LP5036 can't use the "RGB Banks" and "Intensity Control" since the LEDs will no longer be in grouping of 3. Based on your description so far, I think it can be done by LP5036 since you only need to do the animation.

Btw, if you don't mind. Please free to contact me via email (jared-zhou@ti.com) and we can discuss more detail information about your project.
