Hi TISL,
TPS23881B features autonomous mode, and also has a different ROM base. Therefore, in order for the two devices to be equal the TPS23881B will require a different SRAM version, however TPS23881B is IEEE802.3BT compliant without any SRAM needed. Therefore the TPS23881 does not require any MCU to be compliant system.
From a software standpoint, the devices are 100% compatible from register and operational standpoint. As part of TP23881 boot up sequence is to load SRAM, you would skip this step for TPS23881B. From our FirmPSE black box system level standpoint, we ar building in support for both devices. When the system boots up, it will do a device ID check to determine if it is TPS23881 vs TPS23881B. If the system recognizes as TPS23881 it will load SRAM, if it recognizes TPS23881B it will ignore the SRAM loading. At this point the devices are 100% compatible with one another.
Regards,
Brandon
