TPS2540A difference?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2540A, TPS2541A

I'm looking for more information on the auto detect mode operation of the TPS2540A chips.  The only info in the datasheet says that it has "a longer detach detection time, so that it can support certain uniqe non-compliant devices."  Can someone please explain in more detail how this works and why it can support additional devices despite the fact there is still only two charging modes, the iPhone divider mode, and the BCS1.2 mode?

  • Please see the tDCPLOW (Low DP_IN period in DCPLOW DCP mode) spec at the bottom of pg 6. Figure 32 on page 18 illustrates the timing.

Basically, BCS1.2 sets a 1 second limit for the PD to connect. TPS2540A (and TPS2541A which releases in October) just give these "non-BCS standard" devices a longer time to connect.
