LM5180: PSR Flyback Modes of Operation confirmation

Part Number: LM5180

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

My customer target to use LM5180 for PSR ISO module, we are wondering why the modes of Operation will show as below logic?

Just like , why using BCM in heavy load and why not DCM working at heavy load?

would you help to share the reason and how s the benefit here? tks for the checking here.

  • Hi Allen,

Thank you for posting.  It can be understood this way:

    • The IC operate in BCM which is equivalent to quasi resonant flyback for better EMI and efficiency.
    • At light load it runs in DCM to limit the switching frequency and hence the switching losses.
    • At very light load it runs inf FFM to further reduce the switching losses and hence maintain efficiency from being drops low.

    Hope this clarifies.

    Best Regards,

    Youhao
