BQ79616: BQ79616 + BQ78350-R1A Questions

Part Number: BQ79616
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350-R1A, BQ76930, , BQ78350, BQ76942

Tool/software:

Hi,

The customer reviewed the design with BQ76930 + BQ78350-R1A on BMS.

The customer's BMS production must have a 15-year warranty.

However, the life cycle of BQ76930 is becoming a problem.

So I think MCU should be applied to review the recently released BQ79616.

Is it applicable to 8S battery BMSs with BQ79616 + BQ78350-R1A combination without MCU?

  • Cho,

To use the BQ79616 you need an MCU or similar to generate the unique SPI/UART commands required to run the device and read data from it. The BQ78350 will not generate these commands as it is designed specifically to work with BQ769x0 devices.

    Regards,

    Ben

  • Hi Cho,

In addition to Ben's comments, I recommend looking into the BQ76942. This is an upgraded version of the BQ76930 with the capability of acting in standalone mode (without any MCU). It also features much more programmability compared to the BQ76930.
