Part Number: TUSB1064
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65983B, TUSB8044, TPS65982, , TPS65987DDK, TPS65987DDJ

Tool/software:

Hello,

My name is Pavel Skoda.

Could you please review my schematic (included) - I posted my Questions on page4 and Page5?

David Liu provided schematic feedback already except the page4 (TPS65983B PD Controller) - and I have additional question on page5.

Please send the Schematic with Answers to my email

pavel_skoda@nec.com.sg

Thank you so much.

For question on Page 5, "How can I program registers in TUSB044"?

The TUSB8044 supports a serial interface for configuration register access. The device may be configured by an attached I2C EEPROM or accessed as a slave by an external SMBus master. The external interface is enabled when both the SCL/SMBCLK and SDA/SMBDAT pins are pulled up to 3.3V at the de-assertion of reset. The mode, I2C masterer or SMBus slave, is determined by the state of SMBUSz/SS_SUSPEND pin at reset.

The I2C EEPROM can be programmed in two ways,

    1. Using an external EEPROM programmer

    2. Through the TUSB8044 integrated USB HID to I2C master, the I2C interface can also be used to program the external EEPROM. We have a SW that can help programming the EEPROM through the TUSB8044.

The TUSB8044 by default will work without the I2C EEPROM or the external SMBus, you only need to program the TUSB8044 register if you want to use your own VID/PID or special hub configuration.

I forwarded your PD question on Page 4 to our PD team for support.

    Thanks

    David

  • Hi,

May I know which TBT reference design you are following? TPS65983B is an old device that we can only offer very limited support.

    Regards

  • Hi Tommy,

    Thank you for your reply.

I did not find the reference design with TPS65983.

I purchased the Evaluation TPS1064 board with TPS65982 on it (but TPS65982 is obsolete), so I followed this reference design.

David Liu provided schematic with TPS65986 but this one is not available.

Do you have any suggestion please? I need really simple PD controller to work with TUSB1064 to set the UPStream current to 1.5A, no battery charging required.

Please, let me know I am in the middle of the design.

    Thank you o lot.

  • Hi David,

Thank you so much for explanation about the TUSB8044 programing in your previous post.

    I appreciate it!

    Pavel

  • Hi,

If you are doing a single port design and planning for passing compliance I would recommend using TPS65987DDK.

    Regards

  • Hi Tommy,

    Thank you for fast reply!

Suggested TPS65987DDK looks like great solution for my design.

I am sending you schematic (you probably have it) so you can see how it will be used - basically it would replace TPS65983B on Page4 and output would be connected to TUSB8044.

    - How do I set 1.5A Upstream current limit there?

    - 5277.SCH_255-00204-00_REV1_3X USB HUB.pdfIs there any reference schematic available please?

    Thank you so much.

  • Hi,

TPS65987DDK and TPS65983B are not P2P compatible so there will be schematic changes.

For schematic you can refer to TPS65987DDJEVM (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvubs4a/slvubs4a.pdf?ts=1720466190454&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FTPS65987DJEVM)

TPS65987DDJ and TPS65987DDK have the same pin out, just that DK is a ROM spin of DJ.

For the current limit, are you referring to the current limit as power source or power sink?

    Regards

  • Hi Tommy,

Thank you so much for the Reference schematic and DK vs DJ comparison!

Yes, I am aware of the schematic changes - connecting the TPS65987DDK output to TUSB8044 input should be no problem, correct?

The current limit I am referring to is on the power source (Host).

(My two USB ports on the output of TUSB8044 are less than 100mA each, so the 1.5A current limit on the power source (Host) will be more than enough).

    Thank you a lot!

    Pavel

  • Hi,

If you are using TPS65987DDK, the host power from PC/laptop will go to the VBUS pin of TPS65987DDK and the PPHV will be the hub's system side power that will eventually be the output on output port 1 and output port 2. And yes you can limit the sink capability of the port to 1.5A via GUI configuration.

  • Hi Tommy,

Thank you a lot for the answers. I have two more questions.

    1. We are using from laptop/PC the Thunderbolt3 cable to the TUSB1064 Eval board (with PD controller TPS65982 on it) to get DisplayPort LCD output working. It works OK.

A new PD controller TPS65987DDK is for Thunderbolt4 devices. I believe this should not be a problem. Correct?

    2. When I will implement the TPS65987DDK to my schematic, would you be willing to review it please?

    Thank you.

    Pavel

  • Hi.

A new PD controller TPS65987DDK is for Thunderbolt4 devices. I believe this should not be a problem. Correct?

Yes there should not have issue with the transition. TBT4 is backward compatible to TBT3.

    2. When I will implement the TPS65987DDK to my schematic, would you be willing to review it please?

Not a problem! I would recommend creating another thread for the TPS65987DDK schematic review.

    Regards

  • Hi Tommy,

Great, thank you so much for answering all my questions!
