BQ24163: BQ24163 charging issue

Part Number: BQ24163

Tool/software:

hi,

Question 1:The STAT pin of BQ24163 is connected to the LED light, and charging is input from USB. Whether the current is 1.5A or 100mA, after charging for a period of time, the LED light will turn off. In less than an hour, unplug the USB, plug it in and power it on again, and the LED will light up again; When the LED light is off, the STAT pin voltage is around 2.5V, while the battery voltage is only 3.5V. The customer uses a lithium battery with a full charge voltage of 4.2V. The schematic diagram is shown below. Please help analyze the reason;

Question 2:After the customer writes the chip address 6B through IIC, the chip responds and then reads the chip address 00 register. However, the chip does not respond, so the data cannot be read, the waveform is shown below, please help analyze the reason;

Thanks!

  • Hello,

    Regarding your 1st question I have a couple comments. 1)Has the customer confirmed they are not disabling charge in some way? 2)Can you please have customer provide a waveform showing USB voltage, battery voltage, STAT, and charge current if possible at time when STAT pin status changes and charge stops.

    Regarding question 2 I have reviewed the waveform and a possible issue appears to be the 8th bit before the acknowledge. When writing the device address after writing 6B (1101011) the expectation is the next bit is a 0b before the acknowledge to indicate the host is writing to the BQ24163.

    When performing an I2C read it is expected for there to be a nACK after the BQ24163 sends the relevant data. If the captured waveform is indeed the 2nd half of a read transaction then it appears correct.

    Additionally, for your reference the following document has a helpful figure for both I2C read and I2C write on page 7.   https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva704/slva704.pdf?ts=1722547647504
