TPS62293: Regulator

Part Number: TPS62293

Tool/software:

Hello TI Team,

We have previously raised a failure issue related to the TPS62293DRVR IC. Recently, we received another instance of the same failure from the same customer. Upon analyzing the boards, we observed a short in the input and output sections of the TPS62293DRVR IC. Specifically, there is an 8-ohm short between Pin 1 and Pin 6, and a 70-ohm short between Pin 5 and Pin 6.

Could you please share any possible causes for this IC short?

MFG part No: TPS62293DRVR

  • Hi Nirmal,

The short between those pins indicate the high side and low side power FETs of the IC are damaged. Input voltage spikes above the abs max ratings of the IC are usually the cause of these damages. Did you check the input rail to the TPS62293DRVR to see if are any spikes during any particular operating conditions?

If there are any spikes, adding a damped filter to the input of the IC could help attenuate the spikes.  https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slvafe0/slvafe0.pdf

  • Hi Varun,

We have consulted with the customer, who confirmed that there were no voltage spikes during the camera installation. Additionally, we used a TVS diode (CPDU5V0U-HF) in the 5V section, which should protect the board from high voltage or spikes. Therefore, we suspect the IC failure might be due to other factors.

We kindly request that you re-examine the issue and provide the cause of the IC failure. If you have any other potential causes in mind, please share them with us.

    Regards,

  • Hi Nirmal,

I can look into the specs of the TVS diode. Could you kindly provide the following info:

    1. What is the end application?
    2. How many boards have failed? What is the failure rate? Do you have other customers who don't have these failures?
    3. When are the failures seen? After installation or after a certain period of operation in the field?
    4. Could you share the schematic and layout files? You can send them via email to v-john@ti.com
    5. Have you already submitted the failing units to TI for failure analysis?

    Best regards,

    Varun

  • Hi varun,

Please find the required details below:

    1. What is the end application?  -  Camera placed in microscope for eye monitoring.
    2. How many boards have failed? - 2nos What is the failure rate?  - 2 out of 30 Do you have other customers who don't have these failures? - No
    3. When are the failures seen? After installation or after a certain period of operation in the field?  - It failed during its initial operational test at customer place.
    4. Could you share the schematic and layout files? You can send them via email to v-john@ti.com yes. shared via email.
    5. Have you already submitted the failing units to TI for failure analysis?  - No. Please share the shipping address to ship the failure unit.

  • Hi Nirmal,

    Thanks for the info.

Shall close this thread as we are communicating via email.
