TPS25751: Use of BQ devices other than those recommended in the datasheet

Part Number: TPS25751
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24160, BQ25798

Tool/software:

Dear Sirs and Madams,

We are considering incorporating USB Type-C PD.

I understand that the TPS25751 datasheet lists the part numbers of BQ devices that it can control.

Is it possible to use BQ devices other than these?

The reason is that we would like to incorporate USB Type-C PD functionality into the BQ24160 configuration we have used in the past.

Since we cann't control it with I2C master of the TPS25751, is it okay to configure it so that the BQ24160 is controlled directly from I2C master of the host controller?

Regards,

MM

  • Hi MM,

TPS25751 only has integrated I2C support for those specific BQ devices, for any other devices the external/host controller will need to manually control it via its I2C (as you shown with the block diagram).

    Thanks and Regards,

  • Hello Raymond,

We are considering using BQ25798 not only for BQ24160 but also for another model, and in order to standardize the configuration of TPS25751, which is a USB Type-C PD controller, we will control the charger using I2C of the host controller without going through TPS25751.

I would like to have a configuration that does this.

    Regards,

    MM

  • Hi MM,

You can select the DRP configuration without the BQ part attached (see image below):

With this configuration selected TPS25751 will not be the I2C controller to the BQ device and the host controller can then be connected to the BQ without going through TPS25751.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raymond Lin

  • Hello Raymond,

I appreciate that you even told us about the GUI options.

We would like to control the BQ25798 and BQ24160 from an external MCU in a configuration that does not use the I2C of the TPS25751.

    Regards,

    MM

  • Hi MM,

No problem, I'll go ahead and mark this thread closed. For further support please open a new e2e thread for better tracking!

    Thanks and Regards,
