TPS274160: The ESD test problem

Part Number: TPS274160

Tool/software:

Hi E2E,

Our customer is using TPS274160ARLHR to design a product. Some SCHs are as follows:

The problem we encountered was that the voltage of +500V could pass through the ESD surge test; the voltage -500V will burn TPS274160.

We tried to connect two SMAJ28CA in parallel with D20 at the input end of 24V_Field, but TPS274160 would still be burned.

And we have check the ESD Ratings in the datasheet:

In the datasheet, we only see the description of voltage waveform in ESD, but the current waveform is not shown.

We hope that TI can provide relevant explanation and reference.

In addition, the ESD test of -500V failed. What is the reason? Any suggestions for improvement?

Thanks

Best Regards

  • Hi E2E,

Do you have any suggestions for us?

    Thanks

  • Hi Tommy,

Thanks for reaching out to us. Is the customer testing the IEC 61000-4-5 spec with the 1.2us/50us setup?

My first point to note is that the customer is using a bidirectional TVS, which would allow for negative voltages, which could damage the part if the pulse is longer than the specified parameters. I would recommend using a unidirectional TVS on the input instead - could the customer test with that and see if the part passes?

    Thanks,

    Patrick
