TL3842: Variable output voltage control

Dear Support Team

I'm trying to make a 12V output Flyback SMPS using TL3842. The load is a Peltier element with TEC1-12703 (12V rated voltage, maximum current 3A, power consumption 27W), and I'm trying to control the temperature of the Peltier by varying the SMPS output from 12V to 0V.
As a control method, the pulse wave of the MCU is formed into a DC voltage through RC. And we want to reduce the output voltage by applying the DC voltage to the FB pin of the IC to make switching less.
However, TL3842 has a problem that the maximum output current is 1A, which is less than the Peltier maximum current of 3A.

Is there an IC that can be variable from 12V to 0V with the control method mentioned above, and can output more than 3A?

Thank you in advance for your support.

  • The TL3842,1A output current rating you are referring to does not mean the PWM controller can output a constant 1A current. This 1A current is a peak current rating and is the current intended to quickly charge/discharge a capacitive load, like what is see by a MOSFET gate-source. I recommend to download and try TI Power Stage Designer for learning/modelling various power converter topologies (like flyback and many others) and you can also search the TI reference design database to look for designs with similar specs to yours.
