BQ34Z100-R2: Using with Off the Shelf Battery

Part Number: BQ34Z100-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100

Tool/software:

Good morning,

I am working on a design which will package the BQ34Z100-R2 with an off-the-shelf battery. It will always stay with the battery. My question is in regards to the PACK- and BAT- connections. We have a two variants of batteries that we will be using:

(1) One has a standard two wire connection for Power and Ground

(2) The other has separate connections for charging and discharging

For Battery #1 with standard power and ground connections, what do I do with the BAT- and PACK- connections so that SRP and SRN can still measure the current for the coulomb counting? Is there a way to do this without cutting the battery pack open and connecting BAT- directly to the cell stack?

For Battery #2 with separate charging and discharging wires, if the battery manufacturer confirms I can safely tie the grounds together, will it still be possible for the BQ34Z100-R2 to monitor the current since it should still be returning on the negative path?

Thank you!

  • Hi,

Bat1, BAT- is the negative terminal of the battery and PACK- is the negative terminal of the load.

Bat2, The BQ34z100 supports low side sensing.

Please follow the connection scheme below.

    Regards,

    Diego
