UCC28180: Function to maintain PFC operation during momentary power outage

Guru 10940 points
Part Number: UCC28180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28063, UCC2818A

Tool/software:

Hi,

We are considering UCC28180 as a replacement for R2A20111SP.
https://www.renesas.com/us/en/document/dst/r2a20111sp-data-sheet?r=529456

Q1.
R2A20111SP has a function to maintain PFC operation during momentary power outage. Does UCC28180 have any measures to prevent the output voltage from dropping during momentary power outage? Also, please let me know if there are any other ICs that have a function to maintain PFC operation during momentary power outage.

Q2.
We would like to utilize the peripheral circuits of R2A20111SP as much as possible, so please share any information on the closest recommended IC.

Thanks,

Conor

  • Hello Conor,

The UCC28180 does not have any function to to prevent the output voltage from dropping during momentary power outage, and technically, neither does the Renesas part.
What it does have is a function to suspend the operation of the error amplifier to increase the output error voltage during the power outage.
Unfortunately the UCC28180 does not have such a function, nor do any other analog CCM PFC controllers by TI.

The UCC28063, -064A and -065 DO have a similar function to maintain PFC operation during momentary power outage.  However, these three devices are in a family of Interleaved TM-PFC controllers.   Therefore they can not use very much, if anything, of the peripheral circuits of the Renesas part.

I would estimate that the UCC2818A is probably the closest match to the R2A... although it does not have the AC dropout feature.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
