LM5176: Design Queries

Part Number: LM5176
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM51772

Tool/software:

Hi,

We are designing a buck-boost converter with LM5176 with the help of TI WEBENCH. The webench report is attached to this thread for your reference. We have few queries which we couldn't clarification from the datasheet regarding the webench design.

Design Specs : Input range : 10V-50V, Output Voltage : 48V,  Output Current : 2A

  1. We could see from the webench report that M3 (Ref. designator as per the webench report) is rated for 60V/50A also if we try to change the M3 part number from the alternatives M4 also changes. is there any particular reason for that? can we use the same part number as M4?
  2. Is there any limitation in the switching freuency we can set, because if we change the Switching frequency above 100khz the updates are not reflecting in the design ?
  3. How is the inductor value is selected? As per the datasheet calculation the we re getting 24uH, but the webench designed value is 15uH. Is there any other criteria for inductor selection?

Thanks!

  • Hello Ajith,

The webench limitation is the amount of components in the library. So there might be components used that are too conservative for your design. I recommend using the quickstart calculator instead of Webench for the calculation of the external components: SNVC208 Calculation tool | TI.com

In addition, have a look at LM51772, which is our newest buck-boost device.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte
