HD3SS3220: Can I use it for 5V/5A source?

Part Number: HD3SS3220

Tool/software:

Hello team,

My customer would like to source 5V/5A with USB Type-C cable.

The host controller only has USB3.1 PHY (No type-C), so I am thinking to add HD3SS3220 for CC Controller & HSMUX.

Customer is only sourcing 5V/5A, and doesn't want to use PD controller. (No sink application)

Would block diagram like below work?

  • Hi Kei,

The HD3SS3220 can only advertise a maximum of 5V/3A over the type-C VBUS. If you want to negotiate a higher power contract, you would need a PD controller.

Aside from this, you need to control the power switch on VBUS with the ID pin from the HD3SS3220. The VBUS should only enable when ID goes low or it can affect the CC negotiation.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,

    Shane
