BQ76905: Possibility of high side switching

Part Number: BQ76905

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am designing a 4s LiFePO4 battery pack and thinking of considering BQ76905, with my current target budget this part fits perfectly, I observed that it is capable of driving protection FETs on the lower-side.

My application requires the overall system including BMS and load side to have the same ground, so I am considering doing high-side switching. I read through the specifications of FET drivers and found that it can provide sufficient voltages for gate biasing in order to fully turn ON and turn OFF the FETs.

So my question is it possible to achieve high-side switching using BQ76905, have anyone ever tried this before?

  • Hello Vaibhav,

Yes, it could be possible to implement high-side FETs using this device, however, as you commented, you may require a high-side N-FET driver or use high-side P-FET circuit in order to achieve it.

Here is an example of how it may look using P-FETs:

Now, we have not evaluated how this would work in practice. So you may have to perform some tests to see its performance.
