ISO5852S: Suitable for High-Side Gate Drive in 3.5kVDC Inverter?

Part Number: ISO5852S

Tool/software:

Hello everyone,

I'm working on an inverter design and need some advice on gate driver selection. My application involves driving an IGBT on the high side, with a DC supply voltage of 3.5kVDC. I'm considering the TI ISO5852S isolated gate driver, which has a reinforced isolation rating of 5.7kVrms.

Is this part suitable as a high-side gate driver for this application?

Any insight or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. If the ISO5852S is not suitable, suggestions for alternative solutions are also welcome!

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Hi Max,

VISO is the maximum AC root mean square (RMS) isolation voltage the isolator can handle without breakdown for one minute. This spec is not very suitable in this situation as you're repeatedly applying the high voltage over the lifetime of the device. The more suitable spec would be Viowm - maximum isolation working voltage, which is spec'ed at 2828Vdc for ISO5852S, lower than the 3.5kV bus voltage. I will need to double check this value with the team since it seems to be from the VDE standard published in 2006, while VDE has recently updated their standards. I believe the isolation voltage would go down based on the current standard and technology, which makes the part even more unsuitable for the application.

We currently do not have any device that can support a 3.5kVDC working voltage. What is the end equipment? I can feed this information to our systems team so they can look into this request.

    Thanks,

    Vivian

  • Hi Vivian,

Thanks for the detailed reply. To be on the safe side, I will switch to a design that uses a custom isolation transformer to isolate the gate drive circuit.

    Best regards.
