BQ79616-Q1: Design Questions

Part Number: BQ79616-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616

Tool/software:

Dear Experts,

My client is currently evaluating BQ79616 and would like to inquire about the following questions
1. What is the leakage current value of the GPIO pin of the chip? I haven't seen it in the specification book yet
2. Do the sampling line and power line need to be equipped with ESD protection devices? I think the recommended design does not include them. If not, what level of ESD electrostatic testing can it pass?

Looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much

  • Hey Chen,

I will get back with you shortly.

    Regards,

    Abdel

  • Hi Chen,

    1. What is the leakage current value of the GPIO pin of the chip? I haven't seen it in the specification book yet

Yes the GPIO pins current leakage value for BQ79616 should be 50nA.

    2. Do the sampling line and power line need to be equipped with ESD protection devices? I think the recommended design does not include them. If not, what level of ESD electrostatic testing can it pass?

In general we recommend a 5.5V TVS diode between CB0 and GND, and for BAT pin we recommend another TVS diode between BAT pin and GND.

    Best regards,

    Abdel

  • Hi Abdel,

Thank you for your response. Below is our designed 12 string battery BMS based on BQ79616. Could you please help us check if there are any issues with the design and if there are any further questions that we hope to receive answers to? Thank you
    1. For this 12 string design, if I only use 8 strings, can I directly connect the 8-12 strings to the BAT pin externally
    2. Will CVDD continue to output 5V if Vbat>minVbat? Can I turn off CVDD in the software? If I use the UART of MCU to connect AFE, do I need to pull up the RX of AFE to CVDD

    Thank you very much

  • Hey Chen,

If BAT is provided with more than 9V and LDOIN is provided 6V then the IC can be turned on, and if VC1 + VC2 +VC3 is more than 3V then cell readings should be accurate.

    2. Will CVDD continue to output 5V if Vbat>minVbat? Can I turn off CVDD in the software? If I use the UART of MCU to connect AFE, do I need to pull up the RX of AFE to CVDD

CVDD will output 5V if BAT is provided with more than 9V and LDOIN is provided 6V. CVDD is derived from LDOIN voltage. No CVDD can't be turned off in the software. A hardware reset tone or ping can be issued to the 616 and that would reset the digital section of the 616. Yes, you do need to pull up the RX to CVDD.

    Best regards,

    Abdel
