I had ordered and received TPS65987DJEVM evaluation module to evaluate TPS65987DDJ board. Ti recommends to use TPS65987DDK for alt mode implementation.

Can I still use the EVM TPS65987DJEVM to evaluate TPS65987DDK?

Hi Abraham,

The TPS65987DDK is pin-to-pin compatible with the TPS65987DDJ, hence replacing the IC on the EVM would be suitable for evaluating the TPS65987DDK.

The latest GUI tool (v6.1.4) has the necessary firmware base image needed to flash the DK variant. Please do note that the firmware for DK will not work with the DJ variant.

Do you know why only TPS65987DDK is recommended for Alt mode implementation? It looks like both TPS65987DDjJ and TPS65987DDH are active parts.

Hi,

The TPS65987DDK is the latest device incorporating bug fixes found on previous versions (DH, DJ). Furthermore, the TPS65987DDK supports a newer version of the USB PD specification (PD3.1).

Hi Abraham,

The TPS65987DDKEVM would be the module used to evaluate the TPS65987DDK. However, it is currently out of stock. Fortunately, it should be available in mid December.

I need to evaluate the chip before december. I have bought TPS65987DJEVM but the application customization tool build version 6.1.4 doesn't work with it. Is there any customization tool that works with this EVM. I need to get familiar with the customization tool with the EVM that I already bought. (TPS65987DDJEVM).

I was able to swap the PD controller chip on the EVM by TPS65987DDK and it seems to be working. I noticed that TI doesn't sell the PD sink and source boards for testing. Now I have a working TPS65987DDKEVM, I can configure the chip but how do I test it if the configuration is working without sink and source boards?

Hi Abraham,

We use the Power-Z as a power sink device and USB-C PD power adapters as source devices for internal testing but you can utilize other PD capable devices as well.
