TPS43061: Gate voltage

Part Number: TPS43061
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD17575Q3, TPS43060

Tool/software:

Hi support team,

If I use the CSD17575Q3 as the MOSFET, is the gate voltage of the TPS43061's 5.5V sufficient?
Is the TPS43060's 7.5V excessive?

Regards,
Dice-K

  • Hello Dice-K,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

In terms of abs max ratings of this combination, both controllers could be used.

The test conditions of the CSD17575Q3 show a 4.5V gate voltage.
So, if there is a choice, I would recommend using the TPS43061 with 5.5V gate drivers.

  • Hi Harry,
    Thank you for your reply.

The TPS43061 has a smaller VGS, so Qg is smaller.
    Smaller Qg means faster switching.
Is there a possibility that switching noise will increase as a result?

  • Hello Dice-K,

When you carefully read the datasheet, you will find that the TPS43061 does not only have a lower output voltage on the gate drivers,
the drivers themselves are also weaker (higher inner resistance and longer rise- and fall times.
See page 6 - Section "Power Switch Drivers".

Fast switching FETs like the NexFets will always be challanging as they may introduce higher ringing.
So, please implement at least some footprints for gate-resistors (maybe also a snubber) and
take special care of a good layout with short and thick gate traces and a minimized area of the gate loop
(forward path - to the gate of the FETs AND return path - from the Source of the FETs back to the PGND and SW pin of the controller).

    Best regards
    Harry
