TPS7B4256-Q1: Short to higher-voltage battery (48V to 96V)

Part Number: TPS7B4256-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi team - Are there any modifications or protection circuitry that can be added to the TPS7B425x-Q1 tracking LDOs which would enable it to survive a short-to-battery condition for a battery voltage from 48V to 96V?

I see the absolute maximum is 45V, which makes it sound like we'd need some sort of additional protection.

Thanks,

Jacob

  • Hey Jacob,

You're correct, external protection will need to be implemented. Are you able to share more details about the end equipment and why the protection is needed up to 96V? Even for a 48V battery, usually the max voltage that would be expected during a load dump condition would be ~80V, so I'm curious where the 96V requirement is coming from.

In the past, what seems to have worked is using a FET at the LDO output, such that it acts as a resistor during normal conditions and disconnects the LDO OUT if there's a short to battery condition. I will share a schematic with you via email.

    Regards,
