TLC5905 alternatives

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC5905, TLC59116, TLC5948

The TLC5905 functionality is a good fit for a projecct I have, but there are two drawbacks and I was wondering if there were any alternatives for driving 16 LEDS with PWM brightness control.

The first drwback is that it's a 5V part and I'd like to have an all 3.3V system. If I use it, I'll need level shifters.

The other is that it dates back to 1999. That's getting on the old side and I'm concerned about obsolesence.

Combining those, it's also fairly high priced. I looked at the TLC59116 as a possible solution, but the I2C limitations don't fit the requirements.

  • David,

Besides, 3.3V operation, 16-channels and PWM capability.  I didn't see any other specifics; however, there are a lot of potential options.  It depends a bit on: 1) desired LED current / channel (they can be paralleled for higher current applications if needed); 2) Number of LEDs per channel.  Most devices are 17V for VLED, but there are some which are higher and some lower; 3) Protection / special features.  We have products ranging from basic functionality to full diagnostic capability.

I am attaching a chart which might be useful.  It is from our power management selection guide.

The newest PWM part (of course not shown on the guide) is TLC5948.  Most likely, one of these will be close to what you are after.  Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Best regards,

  • Hi John,

The table is definitely a help! I like TI's selection tools, but in this case, I didn't come across anything like this on-line.

My requirements are quite simple, so I'm sure there's something here that will work.

    Thanks
