Hello,

Does the BQ25185 battery charger IC have built in reverse polarity protection on the battery connection? Or is the IC inherently reverse polarity protected in some way?

Hello Gabe,

The BQ25185 does not have built-in reverse polarity protection on the BAT pin.

I recommend checking out this Application Report for external circuit solutions to address this concern: Reverse Current/Battery Protection Circuits

Otherwise, using a keyed battery connector could be a good option to prevent reverse polarity connections.

Hello,

we have an industrial product that uses the BQ25185 to charge a protected 350mAh single cell Lion cell.

We are charging with 150mA (Riset = 2k).

We repeatedly had to replace dead BQ25185. At first we thought that it is dying of thermal stress and reduced the charge current from 300mA back then to 150 mA now. But we still have issues.

So my question is: will the BQ25185 be damaged by a reversly inserted battery?

Hello Matthias,

Yes, the BQ25185 can get damaged if the battery is connected in reverse. The absolute maximum rating for the BAT pin is -0.3V to 5V.
