TPS2061 TPS2049 output capacitor high value electrolytic or ceramic

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2061

Is it necessary to have an electrolytic on the output? The output of the TPS2061 will power a radio with a 700mA transmit current rating.  Can a 22 uF ceramic be used instead of a electrolytic?

  • The usual 120Uf or larger on the output is to assist in meeting USB standards requirements.  Output capacitance is not required for the TPS2061 to operate properly.

Proper design of a hotswap system is still required, the load must consider that it is being operated from a current-limited source.    If the radio has a large peak/average current profile, filtering and current limit should keep the hotswap from creeping in and out of current limit to: 1)  permit startup, 2)  Avoid excessive heat in the hotswap, 3)  not interfere with proper operation of the OC flag.
